A Mending Shift

a bird sings, not because if has an answer to give, but because it has a song to sing … this is my song

A Kingdom Economy

Our economy sucks.

No, I’m not talking about America’s current financial crisis stupidity. I’m talking about the basis of our entire economic system. In the mind of our economy I am two things as a middle class American:

  1. a slave
  2. a consumer

I find it interesting that we still have an economy dependent on slavery. (I will focus on debt slavery here, though I also believe it is dependent on 3rd World Slavery as well, but that’s another post for another time, though feel free to address it if you’d like).

As long as I stay in debt (slavery) and buy stuff (consumerism) then I am doing my faithful due diligence as a U.S. citizen. Don’t believe me? Imagine what would happen if every American paid off all their debt…banks would collapse. Imagine what would happen if every American spent only 30-50% of their money on themselves and used the remaining 50-70% for justice and love purposes (without debt and by living simply we could do this)…capitalism would collapse.

So to help us out of the current economic global crisis I am going to do my part as a good ol’ American citizen by hacking up my personal debt and spending my hard earned money on stuff, remaining a nameless cog in the greatest economic system in the world. In short, I will embrace my identity as a slave and a consume-er.

Or not. I will choose a third way. I will choose the Kingdom over the nation. I will choose to live simpler so others can simply live. I will choose freedom over slavery. I will choose justice over consumption. I will choose the way of Jesus rather than the way of corporate America. I will choose God’s dream rather than the American dream. This is what I choose. And in so doing, I choose two different words:

  1. freedom
  2. love

I am sickened by the focus and news about our financial greed crisis. What about the water, food, disease, and “life” crisis that our brothers and sisters around the world experience daily? That is the crisis I choose to focus on, come what may. I choose a Kingdom economy.

This is what I long to choose. What about you?

    Awesome post, Jeromy.

I especially like: “I will choose to live simpler so others can simply live.”

Chad ~ Thanks. My wife and I were talking one night when it hit me.

Amy ~ Yea, that is a tremendous video clip and is worth the time. Glad you enjoyed it!

Adam ~ Thanks for the link. I also like what you had to say over at Ramblings.

I like my stuff :) Stuff is awesome. ;) ;)

  • http://jeromyj.com/mendingshift/ Jeromy

I know you do Sampson. I usually try really hard to not write posts with any one particular person in mind, but in this one case I made an exception. I was dreadfully thinking of you when I wrote this. ;-)

  • Sampson

Ouch, that hurts…I guess I’ll just comfort myself with my stuff. hahahahaha!

I saw the title and thought maybe someone else had read Wendel Berry’s Essay “Two Economies”. Your essay takes a diffrent spin, but his is worth the read. basically he argues that we have two economies, a small man-made economy and the large, all inclusive economy of God, which he calls ‘the economy of the Kingdom of God”. He argues that every economy of man is only as good as it fits into the larger Kingdom Economy.

Do you know where I can find a copy of his essay?

  • Derek

I tried looking online for it, and can’t find the text anywhere. It’s been re-printed in a few of his books, but I know for sure it is in “the art of the commonplace: the agrarian essays of wendell berry” which is a great primer on Berry. Definitely worth the read.

I found it online here, in .pdf format:

P.S. Jeromy, isn’t it great to have such a wonderful secretary at your disposal?

  • http://www.chadholtz.wordpress.com Chad

    Derek,
Good to see another Berry fan. A class I took last semester at Duke was Reading the Old Testament Through Agrarian Eyes with Ellen Davis. We read quite a bit of Berry and Davis has a new book coming out where she was in regular correspondence with Berry for feedback.

    peace.

Thanks Tracy…it is indeed; so much so it might make us consider moving out to Vermont.

  • Derek

what a cool site Tracy! thanks.

-Chad. A Cameron Crazy huh? Too bad, for a moment I thought we could be friends j/k
(I’m tied to Clemson, and after this hideous season of football, hopefully we can get into the Trevor Booker can get us into the tourney this year)

I’m looking at that site Tracy provided and it looks like there are a LOT of resources here, including another Berry pdf. Great stuff Tracy!

Do you think you’re man enough for the snow? :-)

I think last year we got over 90 inches throughout the winter. Leave them speedos behind, Bubba, ’cause you won’t be needing them here!

  • http://www.chadholtz.wordpress.com Chad

Derek- A hideous football season??? Obviously, my being at Duke leaves me with no frame of reference to empathize with you. I’ll just assume it must be painful. :)

What are you up to in life?

  • Derek

I should, I guess, clarify some things. I didn’t go to Clemson but some friends did and I’ve got a soft spot for the tigers. My true passion lies with UGA. So I, like most of the US, wait for the final BCS rankings to decide fate and then join in the unity, everyone hating the bowl championship series equally.

What I am up to in life is really just being with my new daughter. She’s 3 months old next week and I can’t get enough of her babbling. So I really just discovered this blog while waiting for my turn to play with the kid. How bout yourself?

  • http://www.chadholtz.wordpress.com Chad

Praise God for your new daughter! That is an exciting time.

UGA? Perhaps we should change subjects :) My wife’s side of the family are big UT fans. She is from Cleveland, TN and that is where I lived while working on my undergrad at Lee. My true loyalties, however, lie with most things in PA (I’m really more a pro fan than college – go Steelers!).

Today I am working on my MDiv at Duke Div, pastor a fantastic rural United Methodist church, learn how to be a good father to 4 children all under 6, two of whom we just adopted from Ethiopia this May and try to honor my commitments in between to comment on at least 5 blogs today (does this one count, Jeromy??)

But right now I am reeeeeally enjoying this cup of coffee on this cold December morn.

Great comment over on the little conspiracy post. I couldn’t agree more.

    peace

I feel like I should order up a round of brewskies for you two…mind if I join you? Chad, I suppose this can count as 1/5 of your comments today.

  • http://jeromyj.com/mendingshift/ Jeromy

Tracy, 90 inches in one year? I am not man enough for that. I grew up living in the snow. Now I know where it is when I want to visit it ;-)

  • http://www.chadholtz.wordpress.com Chad

    Jeromy-
Please do. Although it is only 10:30AM here I am sure it is 5PM somewhere :)

  • derek

near 11am now on the west coast, but I’ll take a beer.

Chad- I am a man of all sports, for the pro’s in a Niners man born and raised. As a lifelong holder of minority opinions, I have to state that the best game is the worlds game and and anyone else on the blog who follows Barcelona or Newcastle United is a friend of mine. If this blog belongs to Manchester United or Real Madrid, then I’ll have to go away now. :)

  • http://www.chadholtz.wordpress.com Chad

lol Derek. I lived in Bahrain for 4 years which was overrun by more ex-pats (UK and Aussie) than anything else. It was there that I got a true taste of the rivalries that exist among real futbol fans. I fell in love with those folks – they love their sport and their beer!

  • derek

Thats why I’m a Newcastle fan. Its the only team to whom you can announce your allegiance simply by ordering a beer. Its a two for one!

also I’ve got a pretty good argument why anyone who believes in faith hope and love should be a Barcelona fan. But that will have to wait :)

  • http://jeromyj.com/mendingshift/ Jeromy

Derek, I spilled a bottle of Newcastle onto my Macbook and it died a month later. Though I love me a bottle of NC the mentioning of the name still bring back painful memories and freaks me out.

  • derek

    lol

sorry to hear about the macbook. But let that be a lesson to never drink and blog. I’ll avoid mentioning the beer or the club, but only because I’ve found the only true heresy in this country, and quickest way to get kicked out of any group, is to proclaim an undying love to a soccer team too much and too loudly. :)

    gotta go to work.
